Laser Gum Treatment (LANAP)
THE 6 SIMPLE STEPS OF LASER GUM SURGERY
Traditional surgery cuts into the gum tissue to clean the pocket and reduce the depth. The pocket depth is reduced by cutting away gum tissue. In most cases, the additional use of bone grafting will be necessary to re-attach the gum tissue to the root surface of the tooth. Now there is an alternative to this traditional surgery that a vast majority of patients choose which is the less invasive and more comfortable LANAP®, or Laser Gum Surgery.
Always remember: If you have diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, and surgery is necessary, now you can review your options. There is a big difference between traditional gum surgery, (which utilizes a scalpel and sutures) and LANAP perio gum laser surgery.
Laser Gum Surgery does not require the use of a cutting, or stitches. It is more like a treatment then a surgical procedure. Because of this the result means very little gum recession, downtime, virtually no pain for you. This dental laser operates at a wavelength that can tell the difference between the diseased tissue and the healthy tissue. This FDA approved dental gum laser is extremely safe and selective when being used in surgery. For the first time, Dr. Winson can remove the diseased tissue and bacteria without harming, cutting, stitches, or removing healthy gum tissue!
The Differences Between Traditional Gum Surgery and Laser Gum Treatment (LANAP®)
Pain – Traditional surgery can be fairly painful and require pain medication and downtime. Many patients opt for dental implants to avoid the pain involved in gum surgery. Laser Gum Surgery involves much less discomfort. There is almost never a need to prescribe pain medication and the patients can usually go right back to work and move on with their daily routine.
Recession – Because traditional surgery requires the use of a blade there is no getting away from the gum line being reduced. Traditional surgery can result in lowering the gum line anywhere from 2-4 mm all the way to 10-15mm. Laser Gum Surgery is much less invasive and more selective in the tissue that it cuts… This results in little to no recession of the gum line. This is a very important difference because recession can lead to a number of aesthetic problems for the patient, and cause the teeth to become very sensitive to cold and hot temperatures.
Healing Time – The healing time from Laser Gum Surgery is much faster because of its technology that is less invasive than scalpel surgery. The laser kills the bacteria in your pockets resulting in reduction of inflammation and healthier tissue. Healing time is generally 2 -3 weeks.
Long-term results – Although you fantastic results long term with both treatments, Laser Gum Surgery(LANAP) is far more predictable when it comes to bone regeneration and connective reattachment of the tissue. The laser stimulates the bone that surrounds the root of the tooth and has been proven to encourage regeneration, often saving teeth that would have previously been extracted. Many times we can reverse the effects of periodontal disease.

What is Laser Periodontal Therapy™?
Laser Periodontal Therapy™ also Known as LANAP is a laser based technique for the treatment of periodontal disease using the PerioLase Laser. Many people fear many of the periodontal treatments mostly traditional surgery, so a great alternative. When patients discover there is no longer a scalpel ( cutting into the gum tissue) or sutures ( stitches) and minimal pain or discomfort many opt for this new procedure. The LANAP Periolase is cleared by the FDA as a laser to reverse gum disease.
At the Advanced Laser Periodontics Practice, Dr. Dennis E. Winson is one of Washington DC area’s first dentists to offer Laser Periodontal Therapy for the treatment of gingivitis and/or periodontitis. He comes highly recommended . Dr. Winson is a diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology.
How does this treatment work?
Tartar, associated with inflamed and bleeding gums, is removed from the root surface of the tooth using an ultrasonic scaler and small instruments. Then, a small amount of light energy from the Periolase Laser is directed through a tiny fiber, which is gently placed between the gum and tooth. This laser light energy removes a tiny amount of diseased tissue and aids in reducing the bacteria associated with the disease. After the area is thoroughly cleaned, the body can heal the area naturally. This procedure can be virtually painless, we anesthetize the area for your comfort.
The Benefits of Treatment
Recent research has shown that laser treatment for gum disease will do more than save your teeth and sweeten your breath. It may be the best way to reduce your CRP (21), lower a factor called “glycated hemoglobin”(HbA1c) which can reduce the risk of diabetes and, if you are diabetic, greatly increase your life expectancy.
How long does it take?
Depending on the severity of the your periodontal disease, treatment may be accomplished in one office visit or in multiple visits. The estimated treatment time is reviewed when we discuss your treatment plan.

Success Stories
WOW!! WHAT A BETTER CHOICE!
To my amazement this LANAP procedure is light years ahead of the past cutting, stitches and pain. First of all, the procedure is quick. Only about 1 1/2 hours per side of the mouth. Laser Gum Surgery itself is virtually painless. The worst part is the Novocain shots and then there is basically no feeling at all. No pain with recovery either. Motrin was all that was needed and although you are instructed to take it for a few days, there was no discomfort and I didn’t take it at all.

SHOULD I DO IT??
After much thought, discussion and hesitation I decided to go ahead and do LANAP gum surgery with Dr. Dennis Winson. Having traditional gum surgery 8 years ago, and still remembering how painfully long the recovery time was, I heard about the great results with LANAP. Needing surgery again, I decided to try it. My results have been fantastic. 5 months now after laser gum surgery, I am very pleased. This should be a game changer for anyone who is scared because of pain and recovery time! No pain, gum restoration! Win-Win.
